The Beaujolais region stretches 50 km long and 15 km wide between Mâcon and Lyon, to the east of the Saône. Although legally part of Burgundy, it stands out due to its varied landscape of rolling hills and valleys, its sandy and ancient rock soils, and its dominance of red wines made from the Gamay grape. Its cultivation and winemaking methods also differ from those of Burgundy.
